ALBUM REVIEW – ALIEN WEAPONRY RETURN WITH THEIR MOST POWERFUL OFFERING TO DATE

Posted on by Oran

New Zealand’s rising metal force returns with their most powerful release yet.

If there were any lingering doubts about Alien Weaponry’s longevity, Te Rá eradicates them entirely.

With their third album, the trio asserts themselves as a band not just brimming with potential but fully stepping into their prime.

Launching straight into the relentless aggression of ‘Crown’ and the anthemic ‘Man Moko,’ it’s clear from the outset that this record represents a major leap forward from 2021’s Tangaroa. While their previous efforts showcased a band refining its identity, Te Rá finds them in full command of their sound.

Songs like ‘1000 Friends,’ featuring a clean vocal approach reminiscent of Trivium, and the groove-laden ‘Hanging Like a Thread’ underscore their growth and versatility. Lewis de Jong’s vocals stand out, yet they are complemented by Tūranga Edmonds’ rumbling baselines and the sharp production of Josh Wilbur (Lamb of God, Gojira, Megadeth), which gives the album its undeniable weight.

Tame-nui-ei-rá’ emerges as one of the record’s most ferocious moments, its Māori-language delivery adding a raw intensity that sets it apart. Meanwhile, ‘Taniwha,’ featuring Lamb of God’s Randy Blythe, builds from a slow-burning groove into a crushing, riff-heavy behemoth.

Blackened Sky’ is another standout, encapsulating everything that makes Alien Weaponry such a force in today’s metal scene. Throughout the album, the interplay of harsh growls, soaring cleans, and commanding gang vocals amplifies the urgency and energy, ensuring that Te Rá hits with maximum impact.

Without straying too far from their core sound, Alien Weaponry crafts a dynamic and technically sharp album that flows seamlessly across all eleven tracks. Fans may recognize influences from the likes of Gojira, Lamb of God, and Soulfly, but the execution is entirely their own. With Te Rá, Alien Weaponry not only solidifies their place in the genre, but makes a strong case for their spot among metal’s most exciting contemporary acts.

Te Rá is set for worldwide release on March 28th via Napalm Records. Pre-order your copy here. 4/5
