REVIEW – BMG/NOISE HAVE OUTDONE THEMSELVES WITH CELTIC FROST’S ‘DANSE MACABRE’ BOX SET.

Posted on by Oran

There are deluxe box sets and then there’s Celtic Frost ‘Danse Macabre’. This has to be one of the most outstanding releases, to date, from Noise/BMG’s impressive legacy.

Forgive me if I seem like I’m gushing here, but ‘Danse Macabre’ just hits every desire one could hope for when it comes to a celebrating one of the most important bands in the history of underground, experimental music.

Starting with the packaging alone, this treasure trove of vinyl is simply loaded with quality re-issues, are all pressed on 180g coloured vinyl, presented with the upmost of care and consideration for the smallest of details.

Noise worked side-by-side with Tom G Warrior in creating the very best aesthetic and sound, possible, and it most certainly shows. Featuring the bands recordings from 1984 through 1987, each album is packaged with the classic original covers, and includes the liner notes/inner sleeves, which is a nice touch that only galvanises the evolution of the band during those three years.

Check out our unboxing video here.

‘Danse Macabre‘ features seven vinyl LP’s (‘Morbid Tales‘, ‘To Mega Therion‘ and ‘Into the Pandemonium‘ with a peppering of additional bonus tracks), as well as ‘Emperor’s Return‘, ‘Tragic Serenades‘, and ‘I Won’t Dance‘ EP collection.

And just when you manage to stop shallow breathing from excitement, a glorious ‘Visual Aggression‘ 7″ (on coloured vinyl) is nestled alongside a large double-sided poster and a fantastic 40-page hardback book containing brand new interviews with Tom Gabriel Warrior and Reed St Mark.

A Danse Macabre woven patch, a double sided poster, and a Necromaniac Union fan club enamel badge and Heptagram USB drive contains MP3 audio of all the albums, including bonus tracks, completes this stunning deluxe box set.

Without a doubt, this is the (un) holy grail of Celtic Frost’s legacy and if you never buy another album again, make this your last purchase.

Outstanding. 5/5
