REVIEW – ‘HEAVY METAL PAINTER’ THE PAUL GREGORY DOCUMENTARY

Posted on by Oran

Bloodstock co-founder and esteemed fantasy/Tolkien artist, Paul Gregory is the highlight of a new documentary titled, ‘Heavy Metal Painter’, featuring a slew of Metal artists and the history behind Bloodstock Open Air.

Created by ‘The Art of Heavy Metal’, metal fans can learn the history of the festival, and how Paul Gregory risked everything to follow his dream in this short, but insightful, documentary.

Premiering on Bloodstock’s official YouTube channel earlier this week (Tuesday, October 6th), ‘Heavy Metal Painter‘ is a fantastic glimpse into the mindset of Paul, who tells his story of perusing his passion to paint, despite the financial and logistical roadblocks that got in his way as a young aspiring painter and metal fan.

Featuring members of GojiraMastodonAmon Amarth, Saxon, Molly Hatchet and Blind Guardian, with family members and friends, the documentary provides a great deal of clarity into Paul’s incredible life, from purchasing his first gallery, to taking a chance on booking Derby Assembly Rooms with former Bloodstock business partner, Vince Brotheridge for the very first Bloodstock Festival event, which took place back in 2001.

With a running time of just over 41 minutes, the mini-doc is packed full of Paul’s stunning artwork, combined with Bloodstock performance footage, unseen photos, and how the festival’s grassroots initiative, Metal 2 The Masses is now regarded as one of the most important annual events in the UK and Irish underground music scene.

Essential viewing for any self-respected Metal Fan.

In the immortal words of Paul GregoryIf you don’t take risks in life, then you just go away…bored…and die“.
