REVIEW – SIGLOS ‘RENACER DE LAS CENIZAS’

Posted on by Oran

Siglos’ return with new EP, Renacer De Las Cenizas (‘Rebirth from the Ashes’), delivering a potent fusion of atmospheric Black/Thrash/Industrial, and South American cultural richness, that will no doubt exceed all your expectations….

This sonic endeavour is spearheaded by guitarist Sin Quirin, a two-time Grammy-nominated artist known for his time with industrial metal giants Ministry and to say that it’s a passionate, captivating follow-up to their 2023 debut, ‘Rituales Sagrados’ is an understatement.

Quirin’s foray into Black Metal feels natural, as he weaves ferocious riffs with haunting melodies, creating a gripping soundscape steeped in aggression and mysticism.

The EP’s opening track, “El Cameo Del Guerrero” , immediately sets a dark and powerful tone with coptic monk-style chanting, before a galloping riff pounds like an industrial machine, creating a perfectly sinister landscape for vocalist, Pedro Sanchez, (sounding like a possessed Max Cavalera) generates a truly intense atmosphere, giving the overall delivery of the track a mountain-like presence.

El Paso De Mis Ancestros‘ follows, and for those of you who may have doubts that Siglos are a one-trick pony, this track will, no doubt, extinguish such thoughts. What gives them their distinct identity is the subtle incorporation of South American folk-inspired elements, twinned with their ability to find an equilibrium between, Thrash, Progressive and Industrial Metal, with a deeply-rooted Black Metal influence, and a hint of Doom.

For example, take  ‘En Resiliencia‘ which stands as the centrepiece of the EP. It’s a brooding, atmospheric masterpiece that balances intensity with introspection. Quirin’s pulsing guitar work shines here, blending traditional Black Metal-meets Doom techniques. Sanchez’s harrowing growls feels like his breathing on the back of your neck giving that extra intensity and atmosphere.

Siglos continue to showcase their ability exploring varied dynamics with ‘Sombra‘ (sounding almost post-Punk on the intro), before a crunching groove-laden riff takes control and leads us into a sonic journey that is nothing short of epic.

The production on ‘Renacer De Las Cenizas’ captures the grit and chaos inherent in contemporary Black Metal, but with a clarity that highlights the band’s technical precision. The melding of cultural motifs with their natural raw intensity is seamless, creating an innovative, yet reverent take on fusing aspects of multiple Metal genres.

Siglos has emerged as a bold new voice in extreme metal, and with ‘Renacer De Las Cenizas‘ showcasing their potential to push boundaries, I get the feeling that these guys are just getting started. 4/5
