In a poignant tribute to one of Cork’s most iconic sons, the main roadway at Cork Airport has been officially renamed “Rory Gallagher Avenue” in honour of the world-renowned blues-rock guitarist.

The commemorative unveiling took place on June 14th, with An Taoiseach Micheál Martin TD leading the ceremony, joined by members of Rory Gallagher’s family, the Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr.

Dan Boyle, Cork Airport Managing Director Niall MacCarthy, and representatives from Cork’s civic and business communities.

Timed to coincide with the 30th anniversary of Gallagher’s passing in 1995, the event marked a significant moment in recognising the enduring legacy of a musician whose talent transcended borders and generations. Guests at the unveiling were treated to live performances of Gallagher’s work by celebrated Belgian guitarist Jacques Stotzem, who travelled to Cork especially for the occasion.

Rory Gallagher was a genuine rock star who inspired people right around the world with his music,” said An Taoiseach Micheál Martin. “His legacy is one which reverberates across Cork, and it is only fitting that he is honoured in the city where he spent much of his life.

Gallagher, who spent his formative years in Cork, became a household name thanks to his electrifying live shows, his signature Fender Stratocaster, and his passionate, no-frills approach to music. Revered across the globe for his technical prowess and deep blues roots, Rory remains one of the most influential Irish musicians of all time.

Cork Airport’s new “Rory Gallagher Avenue” forms part of a broader Cork City Council initiative, Stompin’ Ground—a heritage trail spotlighting locations around the city that shaped Rory’s life and career. These include the site of the legendary Crowley’s Music Shop on MacCurtain Street, where Gallagher bought his beloved Stratocaster, and iconic venues where he performed throughout his career. The airport itself is an important inclusion, serving as a frequent gateway for Rory as he travelled the world performing to countless fans.

Speaking at the event, Lord Mayor Cllr. Dan Boyle said: “Rory’s name will be forever remembered at the airport that brought him all over the world, and welcomed him home. The ‘Cork Rocks for Rory’ trail will help visitors connect with the places that mattered most in his story.”

Dónal Gallagher, Rory’s brother and long-time champion of his legacy, expressed his gratitude: “This is a wonderful tribute to my brother. Naming the Cork Airport thoroughfare ‘Rory Gallagher Avenue / Ascaill Ruairí Uí Ghallchóir’ is a heartfelt gesture. Our family are deeply honoured by this recognition.”

Cork Airport Managing Director Niall MacCarthy added: “We are honoured to celebrate the life and achievements of Rory Gallagher by naming the main entrance road in his memory. Our airport is proud to be part of the cultural heartbeat of this region, and this tribute reflects our deep appreciation for Rory’s contribution to Cork and to music worldwide.”

With his name now immortalised at one of the city’s key gateways, Rory Gallagher’s legend continues to shine brightly, both in Cork and around the world.
